What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients — commonly called "macros" — are the three main categories of nutrients your body uses in relatively large amounts to produce energy, build structures, and regulate vital processes. They are protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Unlike vitamins and minerals (micronutrients), macronutrients supply calories: protein and carbohydrates each provide roughly 4 calories per gram, while fat provides about 9 calories per gram.

Protein: The Body's Building Material

Protein is composed of chains of amino acids, which the body uses to build and repair muscle tissue, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and carry oxygen through the blood.
